In Hindu philosophy, the term ‘rina’ translates to debt or obligation that individuals incur throughout their lives. These are the duties and responsibilities that must be fulfilled to achieve salvation. It signifies the interconnectedness of individuals with their community, ancestors, teachers, and the divine.

There are five types of rina:

  1. Deva Rina: It refers to the debt owed to the gods. This is the obligation to maintain a spiritual connection with the divine through worship, rituals, and moral conduct. By doing so, individuals express their gratitude and reverence for the divine forces that govern the universe.
  2. Pitri Rina: It is the debt owed to one’s ancestors. This is fulfilled by performing the shraddha ceremony, a ritual to honour deceased ancestors, and by continuing the family line through marriage and procreation.
  3. Rishi Rina: It refers to the debt owed to one’s teachers and sages who impart knowledge and wisdom. This is the obligation to respect and honour those who have guided and educated us.
  4. Manushya Rina: It is the debt owed to fellow humans. This emphasises the importance of social responsibility and charity.
  5. Bhuta Rina: This is the debt owed to nature, encompassing plants, animals, and the environment. Our sustenance and survival are deeply dependent on the natural world. We repay this debt through acts of conservation and sustainable living.
