One Nation, One Election

The central government, motivated by a desire for efficiency and progress, set up a committee to investigate the viability of ‘one nation, one election’ in September 2023. The committee, which is led by former president, Ram Nath Kovind, has been tasked with investigating how the nation may resume holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state legislatures, as it did up until 1967. In India, the concept of simultaneous elections is not new, as until 1967, it was the norm.

India that is Bharat

Recently, invitations sent by President Droupadi Murmu to the heads of countries and the chief ministers of Indian states for an official banquet at the G-20 Summit in New Delhi created a flutter as the word ‘India’ was replaced with ‘Bharat’. Instead of the usual ‘President of India’, the invitation cards said, ‘President of Bharat’. Government sources told The Hindu, dated September 05, 2023, that the word ‘Bharat’ will be used more and more in the coming months for official communication.
